Active Minds' National headquarters in Washington, DC is the umbrella organization for all Active Minds chapters located on campuses nationwide. However, we believe that individual chapters are best run by students, who have the most insight as to what would best benefit their campus and how to best reach their peers. Is it most effective to set up materials in the Student Center, because that's where everyone spends most of their day? Is Finals time overly stressful, so stress-relief activities very important? Do students not know that counseling is available to them at school, or where they can go to get it? Though the national organization provides comprehensive support in program development, student members of Active Minds chapters have the ultimate authority regarding decisions about their own group.

An additional benefit of this type of student-run advocacy is that each chapter of Active Minds will obtain status as a recognized student group by its Student Activities Council, as well as having an affiliation with the National Active Minds organization. So it will benefit from the double-tie with both the University and mental health communities.
