Some facts about Mental Illness...
- Depression is purported to be one of the largest health problems worldwide by the year 2020
- An estimated 25% of women and 10% of men will suffer from depression in their lifetime
- Depression is among the most treatable of mental disorders
- 75% of people with schizophrenia develop the disease between the ages 15-25
- Approximately 10% of people with schizophrenia die by suicide, but recovery is possible
- Researchers estimate that 20-30% of college aged women may display bulimic behavior
- Each year, eating disorders affect millions of Americans, 85-90% of whom are teens and young adult women
- Eating disorders frequently co-occur with other psychiatric disorders such as depression, substance abuse and anxiety disorders
- Bipolar disorder typically develops in late adolescence or early adulthood
- Bipolar disorder affects both men and women equally and is highly linked to genetics
- 70% or more of patients with bipolar disorder respond well to medication and combined with counseling, most patients return to productive and fulfilling lives
- NIMH estimates that 22.1% of all Americans 18 and older suffer from a diagnosable mental disorder in any given year
- Young adults aged 18-24 have the highest prevalence of diagnosable forms of mental illness at 27%
- Suicide is the 3rd leading cause of death among 18-24 year olds -and the 2nd leading cause of death for college students alone
